From Bush to Bottle – Part Two: From Rainforest to River

Posted by Botany,

In Part One of our ‘From Bush to Bottle’ series, we travelled through Australia’s arid interior and tropical north, discovering the landscapes behind Desert Lime, Quandong and Kakadu Plum.

Our journey continues, but this time water becomes a defining feature of the landscape.

Australia’s tropical and subtropical rainforests provide a dramatic contrast to the dry inland environments we explored previously. Along the country’s waterways, another collection of native plants has evolved around rivers, creeks and consistently damp ground.

These environments are home to Lemon Aspen, Davidson Plum, Illawarra Plum and River Mint – four Australian botanicals that feature within our Botany Native Flora range.

The Tropical and Subtropical Rainforests

Higher rainfall, greater humidity, dense vegetation and intense competition for light create ecosystems that appear almost the opposite of Australia’s arid interior.

Along Australia’s eastern coastline, tropical and subtropical rainforests provide habitats for an extraordinary diversity of native plants, including several that produce distinctive native fruits.

Lemon Aspen: From the Queensland Rainforest

Lemon Aspen (Acronychia acidula) is naturally found in tropical north Queensland and its adjacent tablelands.

Unlike the exposed inland conditions associated with Desert Lime, Lemon Aspen is a rainforest tree that favours moist, well-drained environments.

Its fruit contains vitamin E alongside naturally occurring ferulic acid, quercetin, rutin, chlorogenic acid and caffeic acid. These compounds are associated with antioxidant and soothing properties, while the fruit also offers astringent qualities that complement its role in the Botany Native Flora Face Cleanser.

Sheltered within the moist rainforests of tropical Queensland, Lemon Aspen produces a distinctive fruit with a diverse collection of naturally occurring antioxidant compounds. In our Face Cleanser, these properties sit alongside those of Desert Lime, bringing together botanicals originating from two very different Australian environments.

Davidson Plum: A Rainforest Specialist

Travelling south, the subtropical rainforests of northern New South Wales are home to Davidson Plum (Davidsonia jerseyana).

This species has a particularly restricted natural distribution, occurring in subtropical rainforest in coastal areas between the Brunswick River and Tweed Valley.

Beneath the rainforest canopy, the tree produces its striking deep-purple fruit.

Davidson Plum is found in our Botany Native Flora Serum, where it joins a selection of other Australian native botanical extracts.

Its inclusion introduces another distinctly Australian rainforest botanical to the formulation. While some Native Flora ingredients have distributions extending across vast areas of the continent, Davidson Plum demonstrates the other side of Australia’s botanical diversity: a species associated with a relatively small and specialised natural environment.

Illawarra Plum: Along the Eastern Rainforest Belt

Illawarra Plum (Podocarpus elatus) also belongs to Australia’s eastern rainforest story.

Despite its common name, its distribution extends well beyond the Illawarra region. The species occurs naturally along the east coast of New South Wales and Queensland, growing in littoral, dry and subtropical rainforests.

Its dark fruit naturally contains vitamin C and anthocyanins. In skincare, these antioxidant compounds are valued for helping protect against free-radical damage and supporting brighter, healthy-looking skin.

Illawarra Plum extract can be found in our Botany Native Flora Hand & Body Lotion, where it forms part of a blend of Australian native botanicals selected to hydrate and condition the skin.

From Queensland’s tropical forests to the subtropical rainforest of northern New South Wales and the broader eastern rainforest belt, these three fruits demonstrate just how diverse Australia’s wetter environments can be.

But our journey through water-rich landscapes doesn’t end at the rainforest edge.

Rivers, Creeks and Waterways

Follow Australia’s waterways and a different type of native vegetation begins to appear.

Riverbanks, creek margins and damp depressions create pockets of moisture that can support plants very different from those growing only a short distance away in surrounding dry country.

One Native Flora ingredient is particularly at home here.

River Mint: Following the Water

River Mint (Mentha australis) is widespread across much of Australia but has a clear preference for moisture.

It commonly grows in clay-rich soils beside rivers and creeks, as well as other damp areas associated with waterways.

River Mint contains rosmarinic acid, phenolics, terpenoids, amino acids and other naturally occurring compounds associated with antioxidant, soothing and conditioning properties.

It features in our Botany Native Flora Shampoo and Conditioner, where these qualities complement the broader blend of Australian native botanical extracts.

Following rivers, creeks and damp areas across much of Australia, River Mint thrives wherever moisture becomes a defining feature of the landscape. Its naturally occurring compounds bring antioxidant, soothing and conditioning properties to two of our Native Flora haircare formulations.

Following Australia’s Water

The landscapes explored in Part Two reveal another side of Australian native flora.

Lemon Aspen, Davidson Plum and Illawarra Plum take us through different sections of Australia’s eastern rainforest environments, while River Mint leads us out of the forest and along the waterways that cross much of the continent.

Their habitats also remind us that Australia’s native flora cannot be defined simply by heat and drought. Rainforest, riverbank and other moisture-rich environments form an equally important part of the country’s botanical story.

Our journey isn’t finished yet.

In the final part of ‘From Bush to Bottle’, we’ll travel south and then from west to east, discovering native plants associated with southern Australia, the distinctive flora of the southwest and the forests and elevated landscapes of the east coast.
