Australia is home to some of the world’s most distinctive plant life. Across the continent, native species have established themselves in environments ranging from hot, dry inland country to tropical regions shaped by dramatic wet and dry seasons.

The Botany Native Flora range draws inspiration from this extraordinary botanical diversity, bringing carefully selected Australian native plant extracts into our face, body and hair care formulations.

In our three-part ‘From Bush to Bottle’ series, we’re travelling through some of the Australian landscapes behind these ingredients. Rather than looking at each botanical in isolation, we’ll explore where the plants naturally grow, the environments they call home and the properties that make their extracts so interesting for modern skincare and haircare.

We begin our journey with two landscapes shaped by climatic extremes: Australia’s arid and semi-arid interior and the tropical north.

The Arid and Semi-Arid Interior

Vast distances, intense sunlight, low rainfall and extended dry periods define much of inland Australia. For plants growing here, moisture can be precious and conditions can change considerably between seasons.

Among the native plants found within these landscapes are two ingredients used in Botany Native Flora: Desert Lime and Quandong.

Desert Lime: Small Fruit, Harsh Country

Desert Lime (Citrus glauca) is naturally distributed through the semi-arid and arid regions of Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia. It is particularly associated with inland areas and can grow on heavy clay soils where many conventional citrus species would struggle.

Its environment provides a fascinating introduction to the plant itself. Growing where rainfall can be scarce and temperatures fluctuate considerably; Desert Lime produces a small fruit containing an impressive collection of naturally occurring compounds.

Used in our Botany Native Flora Face Cleanser, Desert Lime extract contains vitamin C and antioxidant compounds including ferulic acid, rutin and naringin. These compounds can help protect against environmental damage, while vitamin C supports collagen production and a brighter-looking complexion.

From its origins in Australia’s dry interior, this unassuming little fruit contains an impressive collection of naturally occurring compounds, showcasing the remarkable botanical capacity found across the Australian landscape.

Quandong: A Native of Australia’s Dry Country

Sharing Australia’s drier landscapes is Quandong (Santalum acuminatum), sometimes called the native or desert peach.

Unlike a plant confined to one small region, Quandong has an enormous natural range. It occurs in semi-arid areas across all mainland states and can grow in woodland communities on everything from sandy sites to gravelly ridges.

Its bright red fruit is the source of Quandong extract, where organic acids help gently exfoliate and support collagen synthesis, while natural sugars assist with maintaining skin hydration. Anthocyanins and phenolics further enhance its skin benefits, helping to soothe, condition and protect the skin. Together, these properties make Quandong a valuable ingredient in our Botany Native Flora Night Crème.

Across Australia’s dry interior, Quandong has established itself in landscapes where rainfall is often limited and conditions can be demanding. Its distinctive fruit adds another dimension to the Native Flora botanical story, bringing an ingredient from the heart of Australia’s dry country into our nourishing Night Crème formulation.

Australia’s Tropical North

Travelling north, the landscape begins to change.

Northern Australia is characterised by tropical conditions and distinct wet and dry seasons. Months of rainfall can transform the landscape before giving way to an extended dry season, creating an environment where native vegetation must contend with very different conditions throughout the year.

Here we encounter perhaps one of Australia’s best-known native botanical ingredients.

Kakadu Plum: A Northern Australian Powerhouse

Kakadu Plum (Terminalia ferdinandiana) occurs naturally across tropical northern Australia, including the Kimberley region of Western Australia and the Top End of the Northern Territory.

Its habitats are remarkably varied, including sandplains, floodplains, creek beds, ridges and open woodland.

Kakadu Plum is renowned for the exceptional vitamin C content of its fruit. This makes its extract particularly valuable in cosmetic formulations, where vitamin C provides antioxidant benefits and can help support healthy-looking skin.

It is also one of the great unifying ingredients within Botany Native Flora, appearing across numerous face, body and hair care products throughout our range.

Across the tropical north, Kakadu Plum experiences a landscape transformed by the seasons, from periods of intense rain to months of heat and dry conditions. Its exceptionally vitamin C-rich fruit has become one of Australia’s most recognised native botanical ingredients and an important part of the Native Flora collection.

From One Extreme to Another

Our first journey has taken us from the dry landscapes of inland Australia to the seasonally changing tropical north.

Desert Lime, Quandong and Kakadu Plum each have their own botanical story, but together they begin to reveal the remarkable diversity behind Botany Native Flora. Even among plants associated with Australia’s hotter and drier environments, habitats can range from inland clay soils and gravelly ridges to northern floodplains and tropical woodland.

And these are only the beginning.

In part two of ‘From Bush to Bottle’, we leave Australia’s drier landscapes behind and follow the water, travelling into the tropical and subtropical rainforests of the east coast before exploring the rivers, creeks and damp environments that are home to another distinctive Native Flora botanical.
